What prompted you to complete your HLM 360 at this time in your career?
The reason I choose to complete the HLM 360 at this point in my career was that I had just commenced my professional coaching and was coming towards the end of my Master’s programme. My coach suggested that the 360 might fit well with the dissertation but also with my future career plans.

How did you find the overall process?
I found the process of completing the HLM 360 quite user friendly and although the survey asked a series of 84 questions about my leadership behaviours, it was sent electronically and the system allowed them to be completed efficiently and in a timely way. I used this method of data collections to gain a greater understanding of what it is like to be on the ‘receiving end of me’ as a leader. I completed my own self assessment and this was added to my line manager, peers, direct reports and others assessments to produce the report. The questions were based around what I do well in my role as a leader, what I do less well, how I could improve in my role as a leader and given an opportunity to offer any other advice. This provides me with a useful framework for my own ongoing leadership development.

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
I found the qualitative data very useful and gave me insight into how I am perceived by the team but also some legitimate areas for improvement. On reflection I do not feel prior to my learning on the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (EGA) programme my results of personal development that I have been able to specifically fine tune following this experience.

Did completing the HLM and receiving feedback meet your expectations?
I found the process of receiving feedback met my expectations well and the report generated was extremely detailed. My coach and facilitator took time to guide me through the report so I fully understood how to interpret the data and comments.

Are you aware of how your organisation may be using the HLM?
I am aware that my organisation is planning to ensure all senior leaders have been through this 360 process but I’m not aware of how they will utilise the results.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
I would encourage all leaders to complete this process but I would challenge them to choose peers and colleagues who will offer an alternative perspective, I would suggest the choice of rater is paramount to the quality of feedback received.

I am a 360 facilitator so I undertook it to get other perspectives.

How did you find the overall process?
Relatively simple, but long winded to complete the assessment.

Did completing the HLM and receiving feedback meet your expectations?
Completing it was fairly simple, but a rather long process. Receiving the feedback was good but some of it seems repetitive – especially the two questions at the end that both seem to ask what the individual could do better. 

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
Quite useful – but being in education I do a lot of work on self-reflection so most of it was just reaffirmation of what I already knew or was working on.

Are you aware of how your organisation may be using the HLM?
Yes, I am a 360 facilitator so I am aware of where and how we use it in our training courses.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
Ensure you allow enough time to consider it carefully.

What prompted you to complete your HLM 360 at this time in your career?
I need one every 5 years for revalidation (medical) and this is more useful that the usual medical models. 

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
Very useful – this is the second time of the HLM and 4th 360 – I have found that there is always useful information that comes back.

Are you aware of how your organisation may be using the HLM?
I have recommended it for my direct reports but as we sit in a local authority it is not usual used.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
Do it!

What prompted you to complete your HLM 360 at this time in your career?
I wanted to be a 360 facilitator and this was a requirement.

How did you find the overall process?
Easy to navigate and useful as a process.

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
Very helpful in that it helped me realign expectations of myself and work out where to concentrate my efforts. I thought the model was very good, as was my facilitator.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
Choose raters whose opinions matter.

What prompted you to complete your HLM 360 at this time in your career?
To understand whether I had a gap in my skill set and how I was perceived by my colleagues and others. 

How did you find the overall 360 process?
Very good, once I was able to get into the Healthcare Leadership Model Appraisal Hub. The process took around three weeks – of getting my organisation to give authorisation to the hub and hub giving me permission. 

Did completing the HLM and receiving feedback meet your expectations?
Yes, it did more than meet my expectations.

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 Feedback?
It was very useful in understanding my strengths, identifying areas for improvement, hidden talents and risks. I chose the facilitator from an external organisation, as I felt I needed an unbiased feedback and she was a brilliant choice. The 360 feedback definitely helped to boost my confidence. I was then able to sit down with my line manager to go through the report in more detail and agree the next steps.

Are you aware of how your organisation may be using the HLM?
I am not aware and when I tried to do mine, I got the feeling that the HLM 360 is not very actively used by my organisation yet.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
I would highly recommend completing the HLM 360, as it either confirms or challenges your beliefs about yourself and directs you to do something about it.

I completed this as part of the Mary Seacole programme.

How did you find the overall 360 process?
I found this a really useful process and very easy to use.

It exceeded my expectations.

Feedback?

It helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses and has provided me with some good goals. It has also contributed to my evidence in the Mary Seacole programme.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
I would most certainly advise completing this.

What prompted you to complete your HLM 360 at this time in your career?
I completed this as part of my development during the Nye Bevan programme.

How did you find the overall process?
I had previously completed a self-assessment against the HLM as a baseline for my own development. I found the subsequent 360 feedback really helpful as it both confirmed some of my own assumptions as well as offering insight into areas that I had self-rated lower.

Did completing the HLM and receiving feedback meet your expectations?
The feedback session absolutely met expectations, particularly as this involved a facilitator that I had worked with previously.

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
Extremely useful in my personal development. 

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
Undertake without hesitation and ensure that you request feedback from a wide group of colleagues, including those who are not natural allies.

What prompted you to complete your HLM 360 at this time in your career?
My experience of undertaking the Healthcare Leadership Model 360 was largely positive and I would recommend it to other people. I was introduced to this model when our GP Dean decided it would be good for the Associate Dean team to do it.

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
The one to one coaching feedback session was the most useful part of the process as it allowed deeper exploration of some areas highlighted by the 360.

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
Definitely go for it. It’s good, more relevant to the NHS than to public health (in which I work) and make sure you get as many people on the ‘list’ as you can

How did you find the overall process?
I initially found registering on the site a little tricky, but that may well have been more me! And then there are lots of questions to answer, not all of which seemed to apply to me or to my educator role.

Did completing the HLM and receiving feedback meet your expectations?
When you have more than one work role, it can also be difficult to separate out your answers between those roles. Anyway, having done that bit, you select other people to rate you, and they also select people to rate them so you find yourself answering those questions all over again. Take a deep breath and carry on though as the good bit comes next. And that is the meeting to discuss your feedback. Initially, the format of the results are explained to you, then you are given some time to read them through on your own, then your feedback person joins you again to explore things further. There are lots of charts and diagrams and you can compare your self-rating to those given by your colleagues but, for me, the most powerful thing was the free-text comments and the discussion with your feedback person.

How useful was receiving your HLM 360 feedback?
It wasn’t all plain sailing although I do feel that the benefits outweighed the cons. 

What would you say to a colleague who was considering completing the HLM 360?
Go for it – after all, what have you got to lose?!

It was a training requirement and part of a pilot meta competence assessment.

It was really useful and thought provoking – and an essential tool to professional and personal development.
