Coaching has helped me to view things from a different perspective which has helped me understand situations and my own and others people’s behaviour better.

As I now have a different view of situations that I am now faced with I can see there are other ways of managing these differently which enhances my ability to manage the people and the way I feel and therefore find solutions.

I am able to be more positive about my work and contribute more effectively than before as a result of this new insight into myself and those around me.
To what extent do you feel your objectives for coaching have been met?
I feel more confident about myself and my ability so my objectives have been met.
Do you have any other comments regarding your Coach?
My coach was great. I am so glad I had her to coach me, I am in awe at her skills to listen and summarise what I was saying when I had gone off on so many tangents even I was lost. She pulled it back for me and summed up what I was saying perfectly. I felt that we were a good match and that she walked me through the process. I never felt judged or managed in any way.
Do you have any other comments regarding the overall coaching process?
I think it’s a great supportive and insightful process that all leaders should have, you don’t realise how helpful it is for you until you experience it. We all think we know ourselves very well but there is always more to learn.

What benefit or impact has coaching had on you?
This experience has been extremely valuable not only to me personally but to my Trust. I have had time to re-evaluate my values and beliefs, re-aligning them to those of my Trust and colleagues. I have challenged my thought process which in turn have had a positive impact on my behaviours.

My work is no less stressful but I certainly feel less aggrieved about how exhausted I am and potentially how I reflect that to my peers. I am far more focused on the job in hand and where I need to take it.

Effective communication! I am proactive in my feedback (wanted or not) because I am confident in what values are driving my feedback. I have a greater awareness of my potential impact on the Trust and organisation and I am happier in myself to use this to the benefit of my Service and Service Users.

Case Study 6 – Screening Manager
What benefit or impact has coaching had on you?
A very positive impact. The experience enabled me to initially validate where I was at with my situation at work and I was able to identify the support I initially needed to help me move forward.

The process enabled me to clearly outline the actions I needed to take to move forward which has led to an enormous ‘shift’ with resolving a conflict situation at work.

From my personal view the organisation will benefit from increased confidence and productivity from myself as a manager and also from my team and the people I manage.
To what extent do you feel your objectives for coaching have been met?
Fully met. I wanted to set up a meeting to resolve the conflict within my team and also to address the lack of support from my manager – both these objectives were achieved.

Excellent rapport, clear boundaries and guidance through the coaching process followed up my 1:1 notes sent with clear actions for our next meeting.

It gave me a focus, encouragement, confidence and understanding of the basics in the NHS as well as the more complicated things.

I applied and got a new job, all due to the encouragement of my coach.

My behaviour improved, and therefore the company benefited from it. My confidence grew, so I was able to make some changes/corrections/improvements in my day to day tasks.
To what extent do you feel your objectives for coaching have been met?
I didn’t have any objectives or expectations, and so this turned out to be such a great experience, much better than what I could envisage it to be.

Apart from the fact that she was so nice, yet pushed me – in the right direction, full of encouragement, yet challenging, supportive, yet questioning, I cannot add much more. It was a great experience, I am very happy I decided to go for it! I was very lucky to have chosen my coach – she’s open, honest, dedicated, helpful, supportive, innovative, friendly and very knowledgeable.

For me it was an almost a life-changing experience, it took me from one to the next level, but I don’t think that people realise or understand what it can do for them.

Wholly. challenges in the work place have limited the extent to which I might have explored further goals and personal development but the availability of session to addressing moving on and letting go have been invaluable

The coaching process has been an effective and supportive opportunity to assess current and future development needs and an aid to decision making on future career decisions.

I found the tone, style and level of support and challenge offered by my coach to be very beneficial. the nature of our discussions have been intense and I appreciate the professionalism displayed by my coach but also an inherent altruistic and caring approach. I found the sessions to be consistent and well structured. I felt that I had the space to be listened to and this was in a non judgemental and respectful way. It was also good that at times some serious discussions were punctuated with good humour and a dose of ‘reality check’. A highly effective and skilled coach.

Mentoring has helped me become focused on what I really need to do in regards to my career development

I was able to share my concerns about my current role and begin to explore my options on what I needed to do next to benefit my career

I have found another role which fits with my learning and career development I have wanted to pursue since undertaking the Mary Seacole Leadership Programme in 2014. I have really appreciated my mentor’s support and advice
To what extent do you feel your objectives for mentoring have been met?
Whilst I chose to have a short mentoring assignment I feel my objectives have most certainly been met. I felt stuck in my career development and my discussions with my mentor opened my mindset to other possibilities and also in being prepared to take a risk in moving outside of my comfort zone to a new area of work

Case study 2 – Senior Programme Support Officer
What benefit or impact has mentoring had on you?
It has increased my self-awareness, particularly around strengths and weaknesses

I have as a result of mentoring accessed training for areas I identified I wanted to develop (public speaking and networking) which has supported me in my role, particularly relating to public speaking. I have since received really positive feedback about a presentation I gave regarding research, which will raise the profile of research across the trust within which I work

My thought processes have changed as a result of the mentoring approach which has enabled me to improve my problem solving and management of others.
To what extent do you feel your objectives for mentoring have been met?
My objective was to have a career plan which for me I am not sure is realistic but what I do have is an understanding of what I want in my career, my work and personal life. I also think that consciously raising my profile and thinking about my career in a more structured way has led to the secondment opportunity I am now about to start

My mentor was enormously helpful, supportive and patient and skilled at mentoring. She was also able to balance being very personable with challenging me.

It is a really helpful process. I would definitely access it again if I felt I needed it. 2 of my colleagues have also signed up as a result of hearing and observing my experiences.

Case study 5 – Transformation Lead
What benefit or impact has mentoring had on you?
It has made me feel confident in my role as a Transformation Lead. It has given me a broader perspective of the organisation that I work for and how it functions in relation to staff development.

I am more aware of how to support my colleagues in practice

It has supported my role in transforming the service. It has also given me a better understanding of the process and who I need to liaise within the organisation in relation to training needs for our staff
To what extent do you feel your objectives for mentoring have been met?
On a score of 1-5 with 1 being the least satisfactory and 5 being the most satisfactory I would score it a 4. I was satisfied with meeting the objectives I set out to achieve
What would you have liked to have seen more of, or less of, from your mentor?
Would have been nice to meet up with my mentor in person but I understood the distance. We did end up using face time, so it was nice to see who I was talking too
Do you have any other comments regarding your mentor?
Felt my mentor was helpful and supportive with enabling me to understand transformation, training and development and support me with preparing for an interview
Do you have any other comments regarding the overall mentoring process?
Initially I was not too keen on mentoring from the NHS Academy as I felt nobody would know who I am in such a large organisation. However, from my experience I felt it was a valuable experience of gaining knowledge, sharing experience and having an external mentor to run information by.
Case study 6- Deputy Director of Procurement
What benefit or impact has mentoring had on your work?
Very beneficial – particularly in terms of understanding and observing my behaviours as an external agent – I was recently unsuccessful at an application to convert an interim role into a permanent role and my final mentoring session was perfectly timed to see how I could have improved my preparation and performance.
What benefit or impact has mentoring had on your organisation?
In seeing the bigger picture – seeing myself through someone else’s eyes – hearing how I come across in meetings and how this differ from my perception of how I come across – difficult stuff but very, very helpful in understanding ways to achieve my objectives and areas on which to focus.

Exceeded my objectives – my mentor brought insight, experience, honesty yet integrity. She acted as a role model.

Probably a few more sessions but appreciate the number of sessions I was able to have.

It was a great idea to hold these meetings off site, creating a safe space for thought and reflection
