Overcoming the Imposter Syndrome
Have you found yourself working at a higher level than expected recently, only to wonder whether you are really capable of doing the job?
Have you experienced a nagging doubt that you could be found out not to be good enough? Or have you put your success down to luck or timing?
Have you noticed a need to be perfect, and an intense desire to avoid making mistakes because they would ‘prove’ you are not up to the job?
Would you like to feel more confident, and put yourself forward for new projects, opportunities or promotion?
Many people have a voice inside that says they could do so much more, at work, in their community or at home. The internal chatter is sometimes accompanied by another voice of self-doubt, which can prevent you reaching your potential. Success also comes with its own trials. Many high achievers have an internal voice asking “did they really mean to promote me?”, “am I really good enough?”, “what if they find me out?”… and it can be really stressful! The irony is that this feeling of fraudulence doesn’t apply to the real frauds, they don’t experience these thoughts at all. These feelings have a name: the imposter syndrome. Or more correctly the imposter phenomenon.
During this two-and-a-half-hour online workshop Kate Atkin will help you to spot the imposter chatter in yourself and others, unpick what might be the cause, and provide you with some practical strategies to overcome these imposter feelings. In the current climate where some are having to work from home, the imposter phenomenon is getting a chance to rear its head a little more than usual. Kate will discuss why this might be the case and provide you with some practical tips to reduce the chatter even in these challenging times. Kate will also address what not to say to someone else who is experiencing imposterism and how to support them.
The imposter phenomenon is experienced by some 70% of people at some point in their lives. Described as a feeling of intellectual phoniness, this phenomenon is not confined to women, or to academics, or to those who work for others… it is widely experienced.
It is a feeling of being an imposter.
(the real imposters don’t experience it at all!)
