Developing Mentoring Practice: The Crucial Role of Leadership Super-Vision

Are you as an Executive Director mentoring an aspirant director either formally or informally? 

Are you looking to develop your skills as a mentor as an individual or as a team to support succession planning? 

In this highly interactive ‘bite sized’ workshop you will get the chance to review your craftskill of mentorship and how you can encourage your mentees (and yourself) to get the most out of this key learning relationship, a cornerstone in talent development.

Workshop Aims and Objectives:

  • To explore and develop further our effective mentor / mentee relationships
  • Developing the craft skill of mentoring
  • Introducing the notion of “Leadership Super-Vision”
  • What is Leadership Super-Vision?
  • “Inviting the mentee onto the balcony, and off the dancefloor”
  • The role of reflective practice in leadership development
  • What makes an effective mentee? Preparing for a mentoring session.
  • Contracting with a mentee for reflective practice and session preparation
  • Trouble shooting the mentor / mentee relationship
  • Developing your action plan to improve your craft skill

 Workshop Outline:

  • Brief introductions and positioning of the workshop
  • Reflection on what is working in your mentoring practice and where is the growing edge?
  • The mentor / mentee relationship
  • What’s the contract?
  • How does it differ from other forms of one to one relationship?
  • Reflective practice is well established in other branches of practice, what’s our experience in leadership development?
  • Positioning Leadership Super-Vision
  • Models of reflective practice that can be applied to mentoring
  • What’s the responsibility of the mentee?
  • Contracting for turning up prepared
  • Insights and Experiments
  • What am I taking away from today, and what am I going to do differently

We know that time to reflect on your practice as a coach and or mentor greatly enhances the individuals practice leading to more meaningful conversations for both mentor and mentee. Your Facilitator: Jeff Matthews

The programme will be facilitated by Jeff Matthews of The Madison Group. Based in the West Midlands, he has over 30 years’ experience as a coach, coach supervisor and trainer. Qualified as a supervisor, he is accredited with EMCC and APECS as both coach and coach supervisor. He was nominated for the prestigious Global Supervisor of the Year 2020 by EMCC.

His preferred style of working is one that builds on the strengths and resources that individuals bring. His own development has been strongly influenced by Solutions Focused methodologies, positive psychology as well as training as psychotherapist, using Transactional Analysis. His first degree was Management Science.

He has his own, successful executive coaching practise, working across all types of UK and European institutions. He has particular experience of the NHS in the East of England, West Midlands and South West England.
